Pull ups are one of my favourite exercises for 3 reasons:
1. Using big muscles burns more calories
A good rule of thumb to follow is the bigger the muscle group you recruit, the more energy you require, therefore the more calories you burn. Wide grip pull ups use your large Latissimus Dorsi (back) muscles to lift your chin above the bar, and your shoulders, chest, biceps and triceps assist them in the process, making it my top go to exercise for upper body muscle recruitment.
2. Having upper body strength is awesome
Men and women are different. You may notice this at the gym: guys tend to have more muscle in the top half of their body than in their legs. Women on the other hand tend to have stronger lower body muscles in relation to their upper body (great for supporting those baby bumps during pregnancy!) So we gals need to create some balance and work those arms, back and chest. And no, that doesn't mean we'll end up bulky like a bodybuilder! We'll just have strong lean muscles that can support our own bodyweight.
3. Progression is possible
You may not be able to perform even one pull up yet, but with consistent progressive exercises to build endurance and strength through the back, arms and hand grip you will get there!
